Cardiac rehabilitation at Ålesund Hospital

The cardiac rehabilitation program at Ålesund Hospital is a structured program for patients who have experienced a heart attack, bypass surgery, or coronary artery angioplasty. The program combines physical training, education, and medical follow-up, tailored by a multidisciplinary team. The goal is to improve physical capacity, increase knowledge about heart disease, and promote coping skills.

About the service

The cardiac rehabilitation program at Ålesund Hospital offers a structured program for patients who have undergone a heart attack, coronary artery angioplasty, or bypass surgery. The program includes physical training, education, and medical follow-up, both individually and in groups. Information about the service is sent digitally via CheckWare to patients prior to the rehabilitation program. Patients also receive a digital screening, with responses used to plan the healthcare as optimally as possible.

The rehabilitation is led by a multidisciplinary team consisting of a nurse, physiotherapist, cardiologist, and clinical dietitian. The training schedule may vary from one to two times per week, depending on the individual course, and can be a combination of digital follow-up, physical attendance at the hospital, and self-training. Through education and individual guidance, patients gain insight into their own condition, which contributes to increased confidence and better coping. Patients log their training digitally in CheckWare during the rehabilitation. In CheckWare, they also have access to information about heart diseases and self-management through the e-learning offering Hjerteskolen.

To participate in the cardiac rehabilitation, a referral from a doctor is required, usually upon discharge from the cardiology departments at Ålesund Hospital or St. Olavs Hospital. Patients who have received treatment elsewhere can contact their general practitioner for a referral. There is no upper age limit, but participants should have a certain level of physical function, be able to walk unaided, and be motivated to train.

This service is especially suitable for patients who wish to improve their physical capacity, increase knowledge about their own heart disease, and reduce the risk of new cardiac events. Through a structured rehabilitation program, patients can achieve better health and quality of life, while receiving support from a multidisciplinary team.
