Frederikshavn Municipality has shown how data-driven energy management can reduce energy costs and lower CO₂ emissions. The developers behind the initiative now hope that more municipalities will follow Frederikshavn’s example, based on concrete results.
Frederikshavn Municipality has for several years worked purposefully with energy optimization and now uses the digital tool EG Omega to monitor and reduce electricity, water, and heating consumption in its buildings. The municipality reaps significant economic and environmental benefits.
- The alerts we receive through energy management in EG Omega are a central part of maintaining sustainable consumption. When we get an alert about unusually high water or electricity use, we can act quickly, says Mathias Holst Mark, Energy Coordinator at Frederikshavn Municipality, who also grew up in the municipality, and adds:
- We monitor day and night, and it saves us many thousands of kroner each time. It is one of the concrete ways the municipality has used software to identify and implement energy-saving measures.

North Jutland municipalities adopting the same solution
We hope that Frederikshavn Municipality’s work on energy savings can serve as an example for other municipalities in the region. The energy optimization tool allows municipalities to make informed decisions based on data and ensure tangible results in energy savings and CO₂ reduction.
- We see strong interest from North Jutland municipalities that want to achieve the same overview and the same efficient operations as Frederikshavn Municipality. EG Omega enables municipalities to develop long-term strategies to achieve savings and make sustainable decisions based on data. For Frederikshavn Municipality, this has included optimizing ventilation, saving 120,000 kWh per year and reducing CO₂ emissions by 48 tons, says Michael Moyell Juul, EVP for Construction & Property at EG.
Documented results pave the way
In Frederikshavn, work with EG Omega has already had a significant impact, particularly in schools, the cultural center, and the ice rink, where energy consumption has been markedly reduced. These experiences create a solid foundation for other municipalities now ready to undertake similar initiatives.
- We continuously run optimization projects that deliver documented results, both economically and environmentally. With EG Omega, we can easily visualize our savings, which makes it easier to make sustainable decisions, concludes Mathias Holst Mark.
The digital energy optimization system allows municipalities to monitor and optimize energy consumption in public buildings. The system collects and analyzes data from electricity, water, and heating meters and sends alerts when abnormal consumption patterns are detected. At Iscenter Nord, the use of EG Omega has reduced energy consumption by 25 percent and, in combination with the installation of a new heat pump, has resulted in an annual CO₂ reduction of 139 tons.
